Men, Be Atlas

The Greek philosopher Aristotle, in his Nicomachean Ethics, leaves us a powerful teaching about the “good life.” For him, true happiness (eudaimonia) does not arise merely from theoretical reflection on virtues, but from their constant practice. Unlike those who believe it is enough to think about being virtuous, Aristotle affirms that virtues are acquired through action.
As he himself writes:
“Men become builders by building; we also become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts.”
In other words: knowing masculinity is not enough. You must live it. If you want to feel like a man, you must first act like a man. This is the central lesson that the blog Fúria e Tradição brilliantly summarizes in the article “Para se sentir como homem, você deve agir como homem”.
Many young men today read about masculinity, Red Pill, and personal development, yet still feel insecure because they wait for a “magical will” to start. The truth is the opposite: act first and the feeling will follow.
Think of the titan Atlas. Condemned to carry the heavens on his shoulders after the Titanomachy, he became the eternal symbol of strength, endurance, and responsibility in the face of chaos. It was not reflection that made him Atlas — it was the act of bearing the weight. Likewise, David faced the giant Goliath when no grown man had the courage. Armed with only a stone and a sling, he did not wait to feel strong enough: he acted with courage and faith, and victory came.
The virtuous man of today lives in a world that demands exactly this spirit. We are trained from an early age to repress our natural aggression, our physical strength, and our temperament. We learn that “arguing with a woman” does not carry the same weight as “fighting with a woman,” and that our masculine anger must be contained. This repression, when misdirected, becomes weakness or frustration. But when channeled with purpose, it becomes virtue.
Rollo Tomassi, in The Rational Male, reinforces this idea when speaking about Frame (control of one’s own narrative framework):
“Frame is everything. Always be aware of the subconscious balance of whose frame in which you are operating. Always control the Frame, but resist giving the impression that you are.”
Controlling the Frame means not being carried away by others’ emotional chaos or by social expectations that try to weaken positive masculinity. It is not “pretending” to be a man — it is being congruent with your masculine nature through consistent actions. Tomassi also warns in Positive Masculinity that modern society accuses a man of “wearing a mask” when he simply acts in a masculine way. Ignore that. Masculinity is not a fantasy: it is a daily practice of responsibility, courage, and leadership.
For reasons that often seem selfish or “surreal” in today’s collective debate, it falls to the virtuous man to bear the weight. Not to stay silent out of fear, but to save his aggression for the right moment and act with his head held high in the face of life’s real problems — career, family, body, purpose. Being Atlas is not about carrying the world out of vanity, but because someone needs to carry it.
If you do not feel like a man today, stop waiting for motivation. Start acting like the man you wish to be: lift weights, take on difficult responsibilities, maintain your Frame even under pressure, face discomfort. As Aristotle promises, virtue is not born of intention — it is born of repetition.
